Eurostar trains are available direct to the Alps, either daytime or overnight. Sleeper/ snowtrains commence either from Paris or Calais. All trains can be booked with Rail Europe although it is very frustrating to find that trains in France can only be booked 60 days or less in advance. Some tour operators will offer these trains as part of their packages.

As with flights, you get no financial protection when booking your travel independently. You may get financial protection when booking with a tour operator but you should check this out: look for AITO operators as they offer 100% financial protection. 

When booking a train go to Bourg St Maurice, France. For the direct Eurostar trains leave plenty of time for the scanning process at Bourg on the way home.
